About the Madison

our hotel

The Historic Madison Hotel was builtin 1912. It began as a two-story rectangular building of simple log construction, with saddle-notched corner timbering and a prominent front dormer.

The original six upstairs rooms were warmed by a cut-stone fireplace in the downstairs lobby. Each room had a pitcher, a wash basin, and a chamber pot. Water came from a well across the street. The hotel expanded in 1921, adding fourteen rooms, a bar and a dance floor. Running water was added a few years later.

Today, the Madison Hotel has most of the amenities you would expect to find in a modern hotel. Log support columns and beams, wood floors, light fixtures, the stone fireplace, and many of the room furnishings remain original. Although not the first hotel in West Yellowstone, the Madison is the only hotel that remains from the early days of tourism in Yellowstone National Park. It still reflects the rich history of that time period.

Very clean rooms and helpful staff . Close to the park and in the center of the main area of west Yellowstone. One of my favorite hotels in a week jaunt through Wyoming and Montana. We got $10 in certificates at a cafe next door which was also a plus
Loved this place. lancejbranch, Trip Advisor
Me and my buddy decided to road trip to Yellowstone from Dallas with no planning. We were wanting to find somewhere to camp, and without looking into it, we thought it would be very easy to secure camping somewhere around the park. We were extremely mistaken. After driving around for hours looking for anywhere to set up camp, we started calling hotels. Collectively we called about 10 hotels before calling the Madison. They told us they had one room available and we told them we were on our way. We got there and they told us that they had one motel room for x amount and one hostel room for a cheaper amount. We asked to look at the hostel before booking and after seeing it, we chose the hostel. It was great. Clean, only one hallway of rooms, nice showers and bathroom. It really did feel like being at home, whereas a hotel never does. It felt to me like staying in an upstairs saloon room in an old western. We stayed one night and decided to book 3 more. The owner talked to us multiple times and recommended spending one day driving the Beartooth Pass, which we did and was one of the highlights of the entire trip. Could not be happier. This place is an absolute diamond. I hope to be back in the future.
Yellowstone trip with no planning. Nick M, Trip Advisor
After I booked a room and before leaving on our trip the owner called and explained that he had a plumbing problem in the room I had reserved but he had a comparable room if that was okay. I told him that was fine. Upon checking in I was told because it wasn’t the room I had originally wanted I would be given a $63 credit. Wow! The room was great. The owner came by to make sure we were happy. Wow! He also invited us to a burger fry starting at 8 pm for all employees and guests. It was the night of July 4th so to celebrate he invited all for burgers. Wow! We decided not to go because we ate earlier. It was right outside our room and it sounded like everyone had a great time. Each guest is given a $10 voucher for a meal at the Timberline restaurant next door. Food was good. The Madison is the only place we will stay in West Yellowstone. We’ll be back!
